ENVIRONMENTAL FORENSICS

Environmental Forensics can be defined as a scientific methodology for identifying hazardous contaminants in the environment and determining their sources and times of release. The practice combines experimental analytical procedures with scientific principles derived from the disciplines of organic geochemistry and hydrogeology. When applied to the investigation of petroleum products, chlorinated solvents and other environmental contaminants, environmental forensics investigations can provide valuable tools for obtaining scientifically supported, court admissible evidence in environmental legal disputes.

Pace Environmental Forensics services are part of our Energy Services group located at the Applied Research Center on campus at the University of Pittsburgh. Here, we offer a wide variety of analyses including, but not limited to, the following:

Product Samples - Gasoline

C3-C10 PIANO Gasoline Range Distribution

  • Identifies 90+ (qualitative) or 120 (quantitative) compounds in the gasoline range distribution
  • Degradation ratios provide information on age of the product

Oxygenated Blending Agents

  • Information on the age of unleaded gasoline

EDB, MMT and Organic Lead

  • Information on the age of leaded gasoline

Stable Isotopes of Carbon and Hydrogen (CSIA)

  • Provides information on source relationship between samples

Density, Specific Gravity, API Gravity

  • May be used to determine geographic location of crude oil used for refining

Aqueous and Soil Samples - Gasoline

C3-C44 Whole Oil

  • Identifies up to 149 compounds between gasoline and residual oil
  • Includes gasoline range PIANO analysis

C8-C4 Full Scan GC/MS

  • Detailed characterization utilizing distribution of alkanes, alkylbenzenes, PAHs, and polycyclic biomarkers

Simulated Distillation

  • Determines estimated amounts of different fuel types

In Situ Remediation Support

Pace is committed to providing the most complete chlorinated solvent remediation testing suite commercially available in the United States. The Remediation Test Panel includes:

  • Contaminant identification and concentrations
  • Degradation byproducts
  • Isotopic Carbon Ratios
  • BER DNA Array for up to 150 microbes known to degrade various contaminants
  • Interpretive reporting

The Remediation Test Panel may just provide the multiple lines of evidence needed to close your site.
